Acne is a big problem for a lot of people. While some don’t get acne as frequently as others, it can cause psychological problems for many people like socio-phobia and lack of confidence. It can also be a reason for some hidden illness.
Actually, acne involves a gland called the Sebaceous gland. This gland secretes oil called sebum. Acne is basically the enlargement of this gland with the excess amount of sebum as well as pus formation and bacteria inside that little gland.
CAUSES
There are a lot of things that can cause acne. And of course, its causes are different for the variety of people living in different regions of the world. The things that can cause acne can be simple daily life habits to some specific changes that affect our skin.
Washing acne away
Whenever we get acne, the biggest mistake that we do is to try to wish it off as if it is some kind of dirt. The blackheads on our faces are not dirt. When we use detergents, cleansers, alcohol wipes, or antibacterial creams against them, we literally destroy our microbiome by over sterilizing our skin.
There are billions of microbes on the surface of our skin. They are part of our immune system, trying to keep our skin safe against many harmful conditions. When we remove that layer of good bacteria, we have less variety of these friendly microbes. So, it can not only worsen acne, it can even cause it.
Side effects of Antibiotics
Acne also falls in one of the side effects of antibiotics. There is a connection between the microbes in our gut and the microbes throughout the body, even those that are on the surface of our skin. So, naturally, if one part of our body is lacking microbes, it's going to stress another part.
Disruption of hormones
Acne comes from high levels of a hormone called androgens. This is why when we are teenagers and our androgen starts spiking at a very high level, we get acne the most. It's the excess amount of androgens that cause a problem with the Sebaceous gland. If you have a normal level of androgens, you will not have acne.
The excessive amount of androgens is a result of an excessive amount of insulin. And as its cause, higher levels of insulin are caused by higher levels of carbs.
There's another condition called PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) in which the ovaries are cystic and they're pumping out a lot of androgens because of high levels of insulin. A female in this condition has too many androgens. This causes facial hair, loss of hair on the head, and acne.
Wear a mask cautiously
A mask can make acne worse, or it may even cause it. Acne caused by trapped oil, sweat, bacteria, and clogging of the pores by the means of a mask is also called mask-nee. There's no drainage in this condition, especially when we wear the mask for too long. A mask causes an increase of CO2, humidity, moisture, and concentration of bacteria from our own breath.
Not disposing of the disposable masks is like inviting acne on your own. Some people keep reusing the same mask over and over for weeks and even months. They keep on letting their skin stay in contact with a very dirty mask.
Stress
Stress induces a spike of cortisol and cortisol can increase androgens, as the result, increasing acne. It happens occasionally that during a stressful period, either people start eating too many carbs or may even stop eating at all. The carbs again raise insulin and insulin raise androgens, resulting in the formation of acne.
Using toothpaste
There are a lot of people who use toothpaste on their pimples. They have to be cautious here that toothpaste is formulated for our teeth, not for our skin.
There are several ingredients in toothpaste that are not good for our skin. These include; sodium bicarbonate, which is baking soda and it is not good to put on the outside of the body because it can disrupt the bacteria on our skin, and fluoride; this ingredient of the toothpaste could even create a condition like acne.
PRECAUTIONS
Avoid Fluoride
If we rub fluoride on our skin, consume tap water with fluoride, or take a shower in water that has fluoride, it may worsen our skin’s natural splendor.
Use Apple Cider Vinegar
Avoid the frequent use of alcohol wipes, detergents, and cleansers, etc. Washing the face with is diluted water and apple cider vinegar is a very good thing for the skin because our skin is naturally slightly. So using apple cider vinegar gently on our face is a very good thing.
Avoid lots of dairy products
Dairy has certain hormones like estrogen, and that can disturb our hormonal balance and produce acne as well. If people are estrogen dominant, they get cystic acne. So, avoid all dairy especially milk and cheese.
Use cotton masks
Using cotton masks instead of disposable ones is a good solution. But make sure that the cotton mask is made from 100% organic cotton because it can be washed and reused
Keep a Healthy Liver
Our liver naturally regulated excessive amounts of hormones, especially estrogen. But sometimes, a disturbed liver can create a situation of estrogen dominance. The most powerful remedy for the liver to handle this situation would be milk-thistle. It does not only help normalize estrogen, but it also regulates the liver against problems, like a fatty liver, or hepatitis, etc.
Avoid Sugar
Avoid sugar and refined carbohydrates but the ones that we can actually take in a big amount are cruciferous vegetables.
SOLUTIONS:
- Cutting out carbs and Fasting:
Reducing carbs is important because carbs increase insulin which then increases androgens and too many androgens cause acne. Going on a low-carb diet and cutting the carbs out will magically make our acne will go away. A combination of a low-carb diet with intermittent fasting will help in even faster elimination of acne and amazing skin because intermittent fasting is the most powerful thing one can do for their skin.
- Getting Vitamins and Minerals:
Two nutrients are very important in countering acne and supporting the immune system, including, Zinc and Vitamin D. If you are deficient in Zinc, which actually is very common, its deficiency alone can cause you to have acne.
Use the probiotics, because if we don't have enough good bacteria in our gut, it can affect the bacteria on the surface of our skin and cause not only acne but all sorts of issues with the skin.
- Consume more cruciferous vegetables:
Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, collards, and radishes, etc. are the best remedy to fight acne. Also, they help in normalizing periods if you have a heavy menstrual cycle.
- Use Cod liver oil:
Cod liver oil helps regulate the skin if it is too oily or too dry. It is a really good remedy, not only because it's loaded with omega-3 fatty acids that help the texture of our skin, but also because it has vitamin A which is known for getting rid of acne, vitamin D, and vitamin B, that can help regulate insulin.
